Bradford became recognised as a city in 1847, and received its charter as a city in 1897 this was expanded to cover the greater metropolitan area in 1974 Bradford now has a population of almost 300,000

Bradford has relatively easy access to resources such as Coal, Iron ore and Soft water as a result of which Bradford developed a strong manufacturing base and became known as an international centre of wool and general textile manufacture. This fell into decline in the mid 20th century and Bradford has since emerged as amongst other things a tourism destination.

Investment during the Industrial Revolution led to an explosion in population and Bradford grew to a large city with many fine examples of Victorian architecture. Bradford's oldest building is the cathedral this and Bolling Hall represent the few reaming example of medieval architecture in the city.

Many former wool mills survive from the Victorian era along with City Hall, the former Wool Exchange, and a large Victorian cemetery. Little Germany is a Victorian commercial district located to the east of the city centre which takes its name from 19th century German immigrants who ran businesses from the many now listed buildings there. Bradford also has a number of architecturally historic hotels that date back to the establishment of the railway.

Within the Bradford City district there are 37 parks and gardens. Lister Park, with its boating lake and Mughal Water Gardens, was voted Britain's Best Park in 2006.

Education establishments include Bradford Grammar School which was established by Royal Charter in 1662. The University of Bradford has over 10,000 students covering a wide range of subjects.

Bradford has a long sporting tradition the Bradford Bulls are one of the most successful rugby league clubs in the world, winning the World Club Championship three times since 2002 ,they play at the Grattan Stadium, Odsal.
